1. Racial discrimination in real estate was considered illegal as early as 1866. Unfortunately, racial discrimination is taking place to this day.

2. Redlining was set in place by the FHA. FHA would not insure mortgages in what was defined as “hazardous” areas, also known as redlined districts. Communities redlined in the early 1900s are still feeling the effects.

3. Discrimination based on sex was legal until 1974 when the Fair Housing Act was amended to include sex as a protected class.

4. Steering (channeling home seekers to or away from particular areas) is unethical even if agents have good intent.

5. As of November 2020, the Code of Ethics now prohibits REALTORS® from using harassing or hate speech toward any protected classes. (Race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation and gender identity) in any communication even if it is not connected with real estate or a real estate transaction.
