The City of Grand Ledge is taking meaningful steps to foster inclusion and accessibility by finalizing plans for a universally designed, ADA-accessible playground at Jaycee Park. This development is more than just an upgrade, it’s a significant move toward creating a community where everyone, regardless of ability, can live, play, and thrive.

ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act, a landmark civil rights law passed in 1990. The ADA prohibits discrimination based on disability and ensures that people with physical or mental impairments have equal access to public spaces, employment, transportation, and more. In the context of housing and community design, ADA standards guide the creation of environments that are accessible and welcoming to all.

Why does this matter?

In the Greater Lansing area, 17% of the population under the age of 65 live with a physical disability. Accessible spaces like this new playground mean that differently abled parents can fully participate in play with their children, and children with disabilities can engage and connect with their peers. It’s not just about ramps and railings—it’s about equity, dignity, and community building.

As a professional in housing, knowing about these kinds of inclusive amenities is invaluable. The Greater Lansing Association of REALTORS® commends Grand Ledge on it’s commitment to inclusion. Accessibility isn’t just a feature—it’s a reflection of a community’s values.
