Ingham County is proving that it’s serious about tackling the region’s housing crisis—by putting real dollars behind its words. For years, voters have supported millages aimed at addressing housing and homelessness, but until recently, much of that funding hadn’t been fully optimized. That’s now changing.

The county has officially authorized $4.5 million in funding for multifamily housing projects. This is made up of $2.5 million from the 2024 Housing & Homeless Millage and $2 million from the 2025 millage. This funding, recommended through the 2025 Multifamily Housing Development Grant process, has already received committee and board approval.*

What does this mean on the ground? In Lansing and East Lansing—and soon in Leslie—this funding will directly support the construction of 290 new housing units, including two large apartment developments and a new subdivision project. These projects are not just numbers; they represent tangible progress toward housing stability and supply expansion. This is only a quarter of planned future development.

What Else?

Further, the Ingham County Board of Commissioners has updated policies and procedures related to its Affordable Housing Development Gap Subsidy Grants. These updates include:

New income limit thresholds (adjusted to 2025 levels)
Stronger compliance and reporting requirements
Clearer guidelines for how funds can be used.

This policy overhaul ensures that money is distributed more strategically and with greater transparency.

This is a signal of growth, opportunity, and increased inventory. With nearly 300 new units on the way, there will be fresh listings, new rental opportunities, and homes to show clients who are struggling to find options in a tight market. Additionally, REALTORS® can speak confidently about Ingham County’s commitment to affordable and workforce housing when working with buyers concerned about cost and community support.
